Library Functions

The library is operated by trained and qualified librarians, who do the functions of technical services for book selection, acquisition of new learning materials and organization of library resources. They perform lending services by conducting book circulation to both registered students and staff. The loan period is two weeks for undergraduates and three weeks for postgraduate students. Users can borrow up to three books at a time.

Reference services:

Because of its importance, the special and reference materials are not checked out. This, gives users an opportunity to access these resources whenever they need. Library users are encouraged to approach the staff in charge for advice and assistance in identification of relevant information resources available.

Electronic library services:

Currently, the E-library provides free access to a growing collection of more than 1500 relevant eBooks which cover the entire courses offered by the University. On the other hand, the library provides access to Online Catalog (OPAC) which integrates catalog records of both traditional and electronic resources. Also, the library subscribes to full text e-journals in order to enhance research activities for both students and staff. These resources can be accessed through any computer terminal with internet connection on campus.

User Training:

In order to enhance library user education, the library provides periodical and systematic information literacy training throughout a semester. As usual, the library conducts formal orientation programs for first year students at the commencement of each academic year.

Research papers & Dissertations:

ZU Library is a repository of all unpublished research papers which have been conducted by staff, postgraduates and final year undergraduates. Thus, the library provides free access to cross-searching printed collection of the intellectual output of the Zanzibar University.

Internet services:

Currently, there is a number of workstations within library premises which are connected with internet. Through these PCs, users can access online information in order to fulfill their information needs. Also, wireless connection is available for those who have their own laptops.
