Background Info

Daral Iman Charitable Association (DICA) was registered under the Society's Act No. 6, 1995 on August 2, 1996 (Registration No: Z0000113778) in Zanzibar, where its headquarters is located. DICA aims to achieve several goals, depending on the resources of charitable work and the response of the host countries.
Consistently with its objectives and following the agreement signed with the Revolution Government of Zanzibar, on January 11, 1998, DICA established Zanzibar University (ZU) as an endowment university. The association is the founder, owner, sponsor, and main financier of the university’s activities and infrastructure, as well as the sponsorship of students from funding sources, endowments, and donations of philanthropists and donors from all over the Islamic world.

  • To promote values, ethics, and education in Zanzibar and Africa, by relying on income from institutions, investments, commercial projects, charitable work resources, and the engagement of host countries.
  • To manage (or run schools), educational and vocational institutions, and improve their conditions.
  • To establish cultural, research, and rehabilitation units that prioritize specializations and their development, focusing on creative management, inventions, and other areas of interest to society.
  • To share knowledge, and educate people through meetings, conferences, symposiums, exhibitions, publications, and public lecturers, while respecting the community and the laws of the host country.
  • To establish scholarships and financial aid programs to help students from low-income families pursue higher education.
  • To create and maintain community centers, vocational training, and skill development programs to help community members secure employment and improve their economic status.
  • To implement initiatives that promote sustainable community development and overall well-being, including health, nutrition, environmental education, and practices.
  • To build partnerships with local businesses, government agencies, and other similar organizations to maximize the impact of educational and community development efforts.

ZU Students Sponsorship:

DICA continued to provide sponsorships to 694 students in various academic programs according to the three categories (Scholarship, Discount, and Loan).

Medical Services:

Year after year, the association continued to provide free-of-charge medical services and health care to the students (3,184), academic and non-academic employees (226) of ZU, through Al-Zahraa Dispensary. Moreover, it provides free medical care services including examination, diagnosis, and laboratory screenings to the surrounding community (not less than 1,200 persons), with a nominal fee for medication.

Students Iftar during Ramadhan:

DICA continued its efforts of supporting Ramadhan Iftar for ZU students in the hostels throughout the month of Ramadhan,1444, by providing free meals (Iftar and suhoor) for all of those who are fasting and residing in the hostel.

Arabic Language Program:

In an effort to empower the Zanzibari community and expand opportunities, DICA provided a free program to all those interested and dedicated to learning the Arabic language, including ZU employees, students, and the local community. The total of students registered in this program is around 150 students in the main campus (Tunguu) and Mpendae.

Sports Activities:

DICA is interested in sponsoring sports activities at ZU to cultivate students' talents and further their physical vigor and mental faculties and it allocates a significant budget to it. ZU team is considered the first in football and basketball. A gymnasium was established at the university, equipped with all sports equipment and devices, to provide its services to students, the university, and the neighboring community, at nominal prices.

Mosque Community:

University Mosque, as it is considered one of the largest mosques in the region. It has a major role in spreading Islamic culture and serving the Islamic community by providing lectures and religious lessons as well as Holy Quran competitions. Moreover, it has a special program in coordination with the relevant authorities to collect and distribute zakat and charity (Sadaqa)..
