Gender Desk within ZU

Our Gender Desk serves as a dedicated office committed to promoting gender equality, safeguarding the rights of all students and staff, and fostering an inclusive academic environment where everyone feels respected and valued. Rooted in the principles of fairness, dignity, and non-discrimination, plays a central role in addressing gender-related matters and ensuring that the university remains a safe and supportive space for learning, teaching, and professional growth.

Mandate of the Gender Desk

Our Gender Desk is entrusted with advancing gender equity across all university activities. This includes ensuring compliance with institutional policies, national legislation, and international standards on gender equality, as well as raising awareness about gender issues that may affect members of the university community.

Key Functions

Prevention of Sexual Harassment and Gender-Based Violence (GBV)

The office leads the development, dissemination, and enforcement of the university’s Anti-Sexual Harassment and GBV Policy. It provides training to students and staff, organizes workshops, and delivers awareness campaigns aimed at preventing harassment, exploitation, and discrimination on campus.

Reporting and Complaint Mechanism

The Gender Desk offers a confidential reporting platform where students and staff can safely raise concerns related to sexual harassment, discrimination, bullying, or any gender-related challenges. The office ensures that all cases are handled professionally, sensitively, and in accordance with established procedures. Support services include guidance, referrals, and follow-up.

Counseling and Support Services

In collaboration with the Counselling Unit and relevant departments, the ZU Gender Desk provides emotional support, advisory services, and referral pathways for survivors of GBV or discrimination. The objective is to ensure timely assistance, recovery, and reintegration into academic or work routines.

Capacity Building and Training

The ZU Gender Desk conducts training sessions for students, academic staff, administrative personnel, and university leaders. Topics include gender sensitivity, workplace ethics, inclusive practices, leadership, sexual harassment prevention, and promoting safe learning spaces.

Gender Mainstreaming

The office supports the integration of gender-responsive approaches into teaching, research, community engagement, university policies, and campus activities. This ensures that all programs and operations uphold principles of equality and provide equal opportunities for both men and women.

Advocacy and Awareness

To foster a gender-aware campus culture, the Gender Desk organizes seminars, campaigns, celebrations of international gender days, and community-based outreach programs. It also collaborates with national bodies, NGOs, and development partners to promote gender empowerment initiatives.

Supporting Female Students and Staff

The office works to create opportunities for women’s academic and professional advancement, mentorship programs, leadership development, and targeted support for vulnerable groups such as pregnant students, student mothers, and individuals experiencing gender bias.
