The Institute of Postgraduate Studies and Research (IPSR) is a central academic unit of the
University established to coordinate, regulate, and promote postgraduate education,
research, innovation, and knowledge dissemination in accordance with the Tanzania Commission
for Universities (TCU) framework, national higher education policies, and international best
practices.
The Institute is responsible for the development, management, and quality assurance of
postgraduate programmes, including Postgraduate Diplomas, Master’s degrees, and Doctoral
(PhD) programmes offered by the University. It ensures that all postgraduate training and
research activities comply with TCU regulations, the Universities Act, national research
ethics guidelines, and institutional academic policies.
The Institute oversees the entire postgraduate lifecycle, including admission, registration,
supervision, progress monitoring, examination, and graduation of postgraduate students. It
establishes and enforces standards for research supervision, thesis and dissertation
assessment, and external examination, in line with TCU requirements for academic rigor and
scholarly integrity.

problem-oriented, and policy-relevant research that contributes to national development
agendas, including socio-economic transformation, science and technology advancement,
governance, health, environmental sustainability, and industrial development.
Teaching and research support are enhanced through structured research methods courses,
postgraduate seminars, proposal defenses, progress reviews, workshops, and mentorship
programmes. The Institute also coordinates research ethics clearance, intellectual property
management, publication standards, and dissemination of research outputs through journals,
conferences, policy briefs, and community engagement.
Furthermore, the Institute fosters interdisciplinary and collaborative research, encouraging
partnerships with local and international universities, research institutions, industry,
government agencies, and development partners, in line with TCU’s emphasis on innovation,
relevance, and impact.
Overall, the Institute of Postgraduate Studies and Research serves as the University’s focal
point for advancing postgraduate education, research quality, innovation, and scholarly
productivity, contributing to national and global knowledge creation while upholding the
standards and expectations set by the Tanzania Commission for Universities.
