Postponments and Resumptions of Studies.

Managing Your Academic Journey

Understanding your options to temporarily pause your studies and how to properly resume your academic programme at Zanzibar University.

Postponements are granted only with valid reasons and must be approved through official University channels.

Postponement of Studies

A student may apply to postpone his/her studies temporarily when unexpected life events prevent them from continuing academic work effectively. Zanzibar University considers postponement applications on a case-by-case basis.

  • Valid reasons include prolonged illness (with medical documentation), family emergencies, national service requirements, or other serious circumstances.
  • Students must remain registered while postponement is in effect and must follow University procedures.
  • The duration of postponement is typically limited to defined semesters within the approved study period.
Students who miss more than the allowed postponement period without approval may be considered to have self-discontinued their studies.

How to Apply for Postponement

Follow these steps to request a temporary pause in your academic registration.

1. Written Application

Submit a letter addressed to the Dean of your Faculty or Director of Postgraduate Studies.

2. Evidence Submission

Attach supporting evidence (medical certificates, sponsor letters, etc.).

3. Senate Approval

The request is reviewed and approved by the Senate through official channels.

Resumption After Postponement

Once approved, students must inform the University in writing of their intention to resume studies before the start of a new semester.

  • Resumption also requires processing through the Dean’s Office and formal clearance to register for classes.
  • Students must re-register and settle any outstanding obligations before resuming studies.
  • A student who fails to resume within the stipulated registration period may be deemed to have discontinued.
Approved postponement does not negatively impact your academic record, provided resumption procedures are followed correctly.
